Video tutorial available below, or skip further down to read written instructions and view screenshots about how to request an ILL.

From the Lewis & Clark Library website, go to Services – Interlibrary Loan.

Click the link to “Search for an item to ILL in OCLC FirstSearch.”

This will open a search form in OCLC FirstSearch. Use the fields provided (author, title, keyword) to enter information about the item you want, then click the “Search” button.

Tip: Pay attention to spelling and grammar: FirstSearch is a technical tool and won’t auto-correct. If you spell something wrong, you won’t get any results for your search.

A web page will load in FirstSearch with your results. You can use the tabs at the top of the result’s area to only look at certain formats (e.g. Books, Sound, Visual, etc.). The default view is All.

Scroll through your results until you find the item you are looking for.

  • Click on the linked title of the item you want to open its record and proceed with your request.

  • Items that have a green “Lewis & Clark Library” link below their title are items that we (Lewis & Clark Library) own. You may not use ILL for items that we own but are on hold, at another location or being mended.

Once in the record for the item you want, locate and click the “Request this item from another library (Interlibrary Loan)” link found below the “Get This Item” section. This is usually found towards the top of the record, after the basic information about the item.

After clicking this link, you will be directed back into Clio to first log in.

Once you have logged in, you will be redirected to a prefilled form that has the information about your request.

To finalize your request:

  1. Review the information in the form to ensure it is correct.

  1. Use the drop-down menu in the Material Type field to select the correct format for the item you want.

  1. Click the “Submit” button to complete.

Once your request is submitted, you will see a "Thank you" page confirming. This means that library staff are now working to request your item from another institution.

If you also have an email address associated with your Clio account, you will get an email notification that a new request was created. The email comes from ill@cliohosting.com.
